Congratulations to Choreographer Kelsey Guy, who is the Fall 2015 recipient of LA Unbound’s Choreographers Scholarship! Kelsey’s contemporary piece “Twenty-Somethings” explores the post-college transitional period in life – full of uncertainty but also excitement and possibilities.
Her cast of nine dancers will be rehearsing at the beautiful Reach Dance Academy in Burbank, CA, with generously donated studio space. Reach Dance Academy offers training in classical and contemporary dance styles for students of all ages. With sprung marley floors and plenty of free parking, the studio is also a great rental location and has plenty of availability. We are so excited to launch our brand new Choreographers Scholarship Program this spring, sponsored by one of our favorite rehearsal and performance spaces, Silverlake’s Studio A Dance.
For quite some time, it has been a major goal of LA Unbound to assist our choreographers in finding free or discounted rehearsal space, since studio rentals can be very costly in Los Angeles. A typical studio rental is anywhere from $20-$40 per hour, and with some of our dances rehearsing 10 or more hours, this is an expense that can add up quickly.
With the commencement of our Choreographers Scholarship Program we were able to provide 10 hours of complimentary studio rental hours at Studio A Dance for rehearsals for TWO of the pieces for our upcoming May performances. Congratulations to the co-recipients of LA Unbound’s first-ever Choreographers’ Scholarship: Brad Milison & Maritza Navarro and Emmie Bauer & Danielle Yasuda.
Brad & Maritza’s dance “Ripe and Ruin,” is a piece exploring the relationship between memory, truth, and the lies we unknowingly tell ourselves. This ambitious piece will feature video projection, a spoken word element, elegant costumes, and is guaranteed to make you contemplate the influence your own point of view has on the validity of your memories. Emmie & Danielle’s piece “Unspoken” focuses on the ongoing fight for women to find courage and find a voice in a society that has a tendency to discount them.
We are hoping to continue and expand this new initiative to be able to offer choreography opportunities to emerging talent in our Los Angeles dance community for many shows and many years to come. If you’d like to get involved in this program, please email us at LAUnbound@gmail.com, or simply click here to donate. Thank you for your support!
